Shooting of Police Officers Shatters San Diego

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The city of San Diego today saw its serenity shattered and its spirit dimmed when gunshots rang out, striking two police officers — one fatally and the other seriously wounded — after a routine stop. Officer Jonathan DeGuzman, a 16-year veteran of the city’s police department, leaves behind a wife and two young children. Officer Wade Irwin, who has served 9 years on the force, is fighting for his life after undergoing surgery.

Tragically, shootings of police officers have become all too common at a time when respect for law enforcement seems to have cratered among many in our society. Meanwhile, their task in keeping us all safe takes on greater urgency — but with very significant danger.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Officer Irwin or a full and speedy recovery, Officer DeGuzman’s wife and family, and the entire San Diego law enforcement community.
