Bishop Phelps, the leader of the New Faith Christian Church in Georgia, gave Hannah Hill, a pregnant Waffle House employee, a $12,000 tip after learning that her unborn baby is destined to have the same name as his deceased son. When Bishop Phelps ordered breakfast at the diner, he noticed how kind Ms. Hill was; he said, “She was so nice over the telephone, and when I got there I paid for my food and I told her to keep the change.” When Bishop Phelps saw her, he asked if she was expecting and when Ms. Hill replied yes, he wanted to give her the money he had in his wallet so that he could “be able to bless her so she could buy something for the baby.” After getting into a more detailed conversation about the child, Ms. Hill said that she hoped to name the baby Samuel. Bishop Phelps’ son Samuel died seven years ago, and the anniversary of his death was upcoming. He went home and relayed what had occurred at the diner to his wife. He told his wife that he would like to raise $1,000 for Ms. Hill to help her with expenses relating to the baby.

Bishop Phelps shared Ms. Hill’s story on Facebook and garnered much-needed support. He was able to raise over $12,000 within approximately twenty-four hours. Ms. Hill, however, did not know what was happening. She said, “I was asleep in the car and my mother-in-law called and said, ‘You’ve got to get down to the Waffle House now.’” When she got to the diner, she saw cheering customers and a giant tip. Phelps said this was “a surprise baby shower.” Ms. Hill said that this money will change her life. She also said that life has been quite chaotic for her. She is stressed and nervous about the baby “getting here.” Ms. Hill said, “I’m so grateful and appreciative to everybody.” Bishop Phelps was so happy that he was able to raise this money and said that “It felt great to present her with a check and I’m proud to have great friends and ministry partners that support and believe in our community first approach.” In a statement made by Waffle House, they said that they “Are so appreciative of the kind gesture made by Bishop Phelps and all of the others who contributed on behalf of our Associate, Hannah Hill. Their acts of generosity are a testament to the fact that kindness and hospitality are two of the greatest gifts that can be given to others. On behalf of Waffle House, we sincerely want to thank all of you.”

Ms. Hill will use the money to fund a car and a new place for her to live with the father of the baby. New Faith Christian Church is also going to pay for the child care costs for Ms. Hill’s other child and the baby for a year.

We applaud Bishop Phelps and everyone who contributed to helping Ms. Hill!
