Mere days after four Dallas Police Department officers and a Dallas Area Rapid Transit officer were laid to rest in Texas, another mass murder of police officers — this time in Baton Rouge, Louisiana — has beset the nation with grief and dismay. On the morning of July 17, a gunman opened fire on officers near Louisiana State Police Headquarters, instantly killing three and injuring three others. These senseless killings tear apart not only the families of the victims, but also the fabric that binds together a free society. Law enforcement alone stands between the blessings of liberty and a descent into chaos. The sacrifices and risks borne daily by police and other law enforcement professionals remind us all of the need to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them in their hour of sorrow and loss. Our prayers are with the survivors, the families of the victims, and the people of Baton Rouge.
