Unshakable Solidarity with the People of New Zealand
The 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the south island of New Zealand today — and the ensuing tsunami triggering six-foot-high waves — remind us of the fragility of the natural world and the vulnerability we all share within it. Fortunately, initial reports cite a minimal loss of life, but aftershocks continue to roil the South Pacific nation that is home to nearly 5 million people.
The suddenness of a natural disaster, whether close to home or half a world away, brings into sharp relief the preciousness of human life and the importance of valuing every moment given us. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of New Zealand as they fortify themselves, both physically and metaphorically, against the destruction and its aftermath in the days and weeks ahead.
