The 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the south island of New Zealand today — and the ensuing tsunami triggering six-foot-high waves — remind us of the fragility of the natural world and the vulnerability we all share within it. Fortunately, initial reports cite a minimal loss of life, but aftershocks continue to roil the South Pacific nation that is home to nearly 5 million people.

The suddenness of a natural disaster, whether close to home or half a world away, brings into sharp relief the preciousness of human life and the importance of valuing every moment given us.
